Meet NYC-Based Duo: Gracie and Rachel!

July 19, 2018 | Music

Light and dark; Gracie and Rachel are a New York-based duo who create sonic and visual juxtaposition. Classically trained musicians with modern pop sensibilities.  The pair weaves piano (Gracie) and violin (Rachel) over their voices to create unity through contrast. “We’re working to express a duality that’s open to everyone," says Gracie. The nine orchestral-pop songs on 'Gracie and Rachel' tell a story that's rooted in the truth - their truth - but retain an enigmatic air that makes them relatable to anyone who has ever found their heart racing with doubt and pushed forward regardless.

The duo met at a high school dance class in Berkeley, California. They were assigned a musical collaboration which evolved into what you see today. After attending separate music schools, they reunited in Brooklyn “living, working, breathing every moment together, and making music in that universe,” says Rachel.

Striking visuals are the first thing you notice about Gracie and Rachel. Clad in all black, Rachel acts as a sleek contrast to Gracie in clean white. The duo's use of black and white extends to their music videos. “Don’t Know,” their latest video, uses the group's signature visuals to show “a song of empowerment and an urgency to fight back from being controlled," says Gracie.

"I'm moving my mouth but I don't say a word / My ears are open but nothing is heard / I'm only a child, only a child." Bob Boilen of NPR was struck by the tension Gracie and Rachel were able to create on their song “Only a Child”.  NPR listeners voted them #4 on “Favorite New Artists of 2017” for All Songs Considered, with comments like "Innovative beautiful music. Passionate devotion to honest storytelling. Eminently stimulating to listen to."

Gracie and Rachel also recently did an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, a prestigious and intimate concert series recorded live at the desk (which is indeed tiny) of All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen.
